History of Mining in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs was known for many things, but being a major mining town was not one of them. Colorado Springs was primarily a military town with its large U.S. Air Force base and the San Luis Valley being a major source of gold. While gold did exist in the area, most of the gold in the area was used in the jewelry industry and there were no major gold mines nearby. Copper was the first major metal found in the Pikes Peak region and the Colorado Springs area was the first major copper mining area in the United States. The first copper mine in the area was the El Paso Mine, which opened in 1875. By 1880, there were nine copper mines in the area. Colorado Springs continued as a major mining area until the 1920s, when low copper prices and environmental regulations wiped out most of the mines in the area.
